Lilium bolanderi is a fabulous dryland lily species, however extremely difficult to grow. It grows in California and Oregon in serpentine gravel with excellent drainage which needs to be mimicked in cultivation. It is very sensitive to any excess moisture. A covering during winter against winter wet is essential, needs to be kept dry from flowering onwards into autumn as well. If you do succeed, you will be rewarded with huge thick stems of gleaming red wax flowers which will blow you away. The leaves are also highly decorative blueish grey whirls.
