Native to Californian woodlands, Calypso bulbosa is a fascinating plant worth growing if only just for its name. However, there is of course the fabulous orchid looking flowers as well. Not the easiest species to grow but not impossible, the key is to know that it is indeed hardy but summer dormant, meaning it prefers dryer conditions from June to October. If these conditions cannot be provided there are risks of very small tuber rotting. Produces overwintering leaves which can get easily damaged so may need protection against excess winter wet and wind. Flowers in April-May. Grows best in well drained in humus-rich soil.
