This small Japanese ruby gem is native to Honshu from 900 to 1800 metres,
where it grows on grassy slopes. These are usually snow-covered in winter, keeping the bulbs dry, until sometimes as late as May. Stems reach 20 – 50 cm and grow very rapidly in spring, as temperatures rise, with the fragrant deep pink small trumpet-shaped flowers already opening by mid-May.
Not the easiest species to grow, but not impossible, in a raised bed of humus rich soil, with a cold winter and good moisture and watering when in growth.
